20 Time is a project that students work on for 20% of their class time at school. It is based off of the student's own interests so students can enjoy working on their project. The project should be complex and problem/solution oriented or achieve progress towards a bigger goal. 20 Time is meant to reduce student stress and have a fun project for students to work on during class time.
The essential question for my project is "How does the amount of sleep affect how one functions throughout the day and how does it affect the rest of the week?" I chose this to be my 20 Time project because it seemed very important to me to find out the ideal amount of sleep that a high school student needs to be able to function at their best during class. I also wanted to learn how to balance extracurricular activities and school and see what causes sleep deprivation. There are many things that can affect sleep, such as stress, or eating patterns, physical conditions, etc. so I wanted to find out what the major cause of sleep deprivation is for me and how if affects how I function in class.
My goals are to record my sleep every night and how I feel during the day. If there is a test or quiz, I need to especially pay attention to how I function that day as well as the day and night before. I want to find out what major causes of sleep deprivation are for high schoolers and how we can decrease sleep deprivation.
To measure my progress, I'll have a table which I'll record everything in on a daily basis. It will have what time I slept, what time I woke up, how I felt, what I did that day, and an other comments section for additional information. I plan on recording this daily s for about 2-3 weeks. My plan on moving forward, as of right now, is to start recording my sleeping patterns and pay attention to how I function throughout the day.

I think this is a great idea, but I feel the data might be subjective since there are other factors that contribute to mood. However, this is a really important and I'm interested to see how your project turns out.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very great idea. However, I believe that this should be pretty hard to experiment on, since there are many different factors that affect what you feel that day.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great idea. A lot of high school students do not know the full effects of getting less sleep. Have you though about trying to get other people to do something similar so you have more data?

I really liked your idea of making a table of how you feel and other things every day for a few weeks. One thing that you could add is the work load aspect of all the grade levels and you could maybe split the table into 4 groups: freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior. I really like your idea and I hope that it works well. One question that I have is, what is the scale that you will use to measure how you felt that day?

This is a great 20 time project! You want to find how sleep affects the brain and the optimal amount of sleep for the best help benefit.
