Unit 4 Reflection

Unit 4 asked "Why is sex so great?" We learned about what makes sex so important for life and how sex works. Throughout the unit, anything that results from sexual reproduction was learned about for each lesson. It was important to understand why sex is so important for life. My strengths were using Punnet squares to predict the genotypes or offspring and understanding Mendel's laws. My weaknesses were understanding mitosis and meiosis.

From these experiences, I learned a lot more about sexual reproduction and how some traits are genetic. It strengthened my understanding of inheritance. From doing the infographic, I learned more about how the concepts we learn in class can relate to the real world, which further helped me understand more about why sex is so important.

Before this unit, I barely knew anything about genetics, but now I know a lot more about inheritance and chromosomes and the works of Gregor Mendel. I would want to learn more about how gene linkage works and how organisms know where to use mitosis and where to use meiosis when reproducing their own cells.

Using the VARK Questionaire, the results for what my learning style is said that I was more of a kinesthetic and visual learner than an aural and linguistic learner. My scored for both kinesthetic and visual were 10, linguistic was 7, and aural I got a score of 6. I wasn't too surprised with the results since I've always known that I am a kinesthetic learner. But I never thought of myself as much of a visual learner before this year. To help me study effectively and take advantage of the way I learn, I use pictures and diagrams to study. I also like to use colored pens to help me organize things and it's easier for me to study with more colors. For this unit, I used a lot of colored pens for my vodcast notes and the daily Do Now's. I also printed all the vodcast notes in color so all the pictures are easier to study.

I used colors for the dihybrid Punnett square so I could distinguish the different phenotypes.

  1. Do you think your new color coding strategies helped you retain information better from class?
